Ski with a Scientist -Justin Waskiewicz

01/16/2023 @ 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Free

Ski with a scientist is part of the Save Winter initiative for the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games. It is a comprehensive sustainability initiative that intersects climate awareness and winter sports.

Participants ski with experts in multiple fields that revolve around climate, reducing carbon inputs and how to create a sustainable future. Scientists will stop along the stunning winter landscape at the Paul Smith’s College VIC and present on their research.

The Paul Smith’s College VIC has over 25 miles of ski trails, a mix of groomed cross country trails suitable for skate skiing, narrow groomed trails for classic techniques and a remote backcountry ski zone on Jenkins Mountain. The VIC rents XC skis for just $15.

The program is FREE but a trail Pass is required. A donation to benefit Paul Smith’s College , the VIC, sustainability and research is appreciated. While this program is designed for any level skier we ask for a participant with some experience on skis. No snowshoes.

Dr. Waskiewicz is Professor of Forestry at Paul Smith’s College. He earned both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in forestry at Northern Arizona University and his Ph.D. in forest resources at the University of Maine. For his doctoral research, he studied silviculture, in particular the influence of competition among neighboring trees on growth of northern red oak – eastern white pine forests.
