Advanced Land Navigation
August 21 @ 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
One event on 08/21/2022 at 9:00 AM
Further to basic land navigation, Level 1, the advanced course provides the opportunity to put the skills you learned to practical use when “bushwhacking” off trail to specific UTM’s.
The Level 2 course is largely field based, come prepared with outdoor clothing, emergency gear and food. You will apply your navigation and orienteering skills over longer distances entirely off trail. At the start of the course, you will be given a USGS topographic map, several UTM’s, shown a designated starting point and then asked to navigate to each of the locations with only a map and compass. You will work in pairs and each pair will be teamed with an old ranger who will stay with you, teach, and help throughout the day, but you will be navigating. We believe this is a fun and challenging exercise that will improve your navigational ability and confidence. The goal is that after taking the course you will be able to:
• Plot and plan routes to a given set of UTM coordinates
• Determine alternative route plans and select and execute the best one
• Identify terrain features in the field and match them to precise spot on a map.
• Improve your skills with a compass while also selecting the safest and most efficient route while you navigate the terrain you encounter.
